ABOUT THIS MIX:
Selections & Vibe:
This mix maintains a steady balance of popular songs from the ’60s through now, so that every age range gets catered to. There are also multiple genres and tempos, so the vibe will never get stagnant.
This mix moves from song to song at a pace that isn’t too aggressive for cocktail hour, but also isn’t so slow that it feels like a regular, unmixed playlist. I cut the songs down just enough to keep the flow feeling consistent throughout the entire mix.
100% Clean:
Even though a lot of couples are cool with explicit music on the dance floor these days, it’s still smart to keep cocktail hour clean. This mix provides that.
Transitions:
Every transition was meticulously handcrafted in Ableton to make this mix sound as smooth and seamless as possible. You don’t have to worry about any awkward gaps of silence between songs or sloppy sounding fades. I promise you that these are the smoothest transitions that you’ll ever hear with these types of songs.
Avoiding Common DNP Artists and Questionable Songs:
This mix does not have any songs from Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé, or Justin Timberlake because these are the artists that seem to pop up the most on “Do Not Play” lists for weddings.
I also avoided specific songs like “Happy” by Pharrell, “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz, and “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke for the same reason.
On top of that, I made sure to avoid songs with sad, depressing, or questionable themes. There are no breakup songs, heartbreak songs, or songs that reference heartache, a cold heart, or anything that could bring down the mood.
And just to be super careful, there are no songs that are named after girls. I avoided songs like “Valerie,” “Meet Virginia,” “Amber,” “Rosanna,” “Jack & Diane,” “Maria,” etc. I’ve never had it happen to me, but if the groom had a crazy-ass ex with the same name as a song that the DJ plays, it could make things awkward. Even though it’s far-fetched, this mix will never put you in that situation.
(Note: If your couple wants to hear any of the artists or songs that this mix avoids, you can play them during dinner time, and you won’t have to worry about it being a repeat.)
Duration:
Sometimes the cocktail “hour” lasts longer than expected. This mix has over 2 hours of playtime, so even if your cocktail hour runs a little late… or very late, you can rest assured that this mix will have you covered!
